Celebrating the life of

John Thomas "Tommy" Cupstid

November 23, 1932 - August 09, 2024

John Thomas

John Thomas "Tommy" Cupstid, adored father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024. Son of Woodrow Wilson Cupstid and Bernice Spires, Tommy grew up in Savannah and graduated from the Benedictine Military School in 1951. That same year, he married his high school sweetheart and lifelong best friend, Frances (nee Hursey). Tommy loved all things Savannah, especially taking trips to the Big Park, and took great pride in his city. He was also a proud U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War, after which he spent his career working for Chatham Steel.

To his family and friends, Tommy--more affectionately known as JT--was known as an incredibly entertaining and hardworking man who had a genuine passion for sports and games. Over the years, he enjoyed coaching and watching his children succeed in many different sports. He himself also excelled at playing softball, which led to his induction into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame in 1998 and into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. Tommy truly loved road tripping across the U.S. with Frances, playing Hand and Foot with his family, and introducing new generations to black and white films.

Tommy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his son, Tommy. He is survived by his children Chris (Gary), Larry, and Laurie (Joe), as well as daughter-in-law, Ann. He also leaves behind 9 doting grandchildren: Brian (Suzy), Craig (Susan), Daven (Kaye), Katie (Aaron), Lauren, Emily (Bradley), Bobby, Will, and Ben; and 9 great-grandchildren. While Tommy may be gone, his good-natured and competitive spirit lives on in his family.

A memorial service is to be held in the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel on August 24th at 1PM.

I was good friends with Chris Cupstid. My mama, Cleo Madera Sparks Rockwell Olson would drive me to Chris' house so we could play. This was in Paradise Park, not far from my house on Magnolia Avenue. Chris was a good friend and I remember her mother and daddy.
